Gonorrhea Superbug Beware: Resistant Gonorrhea Strain Has Arrived

A brand new strain of the gonorrhea bacteria can resist all available antibiotics, doctors say. Gonorrhea is without doubt one of the world’s most common sexually transmitted diseases, so this might portend a serious risk to public health.

Now researchers in Sweden and Japan identified a new variant of the bacterium that causes gonorrhea, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, also called H041, as resistance to all cephalosporin-class antibiotics – the last class of medicine still {effective in treating gonorrhea. Researchers isolated the strain from the throat of a sex worker in Japan, the Los Angeles Times reports.

“This is both an alarming and a predictable discovery,” stated Dr. Magnus Unemo, of the Swedish Reference Laboratory for Pathogenic Neisseria, in a statement. The bacteria have been evolving to withstand antibiotics since they became the standard remedy for the infection in the 1940s, throughout World War II.

Gonorrhea, one of the most widespread sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), can have severe health consequences, including infertility in women, and might enhance an individual’s risk for acquiring HIV.

While antibiotics can efficiently deal with gonorrhea, over time the bacteria has developed resistance to a number of those medicine … CDC now recommends just one class of antibiotics, known as cephalosporins . However, findings from the current analysis sign the potential for resistance to cephalosporins, the last line of defense for treating gonorrhea.

The term superbug refers to a bacteria that is capable of survive exposure to antibiotics — most certainly as a result of it genetically evolved to resist them.
